Drawn by J. Ruiz in August 1993, checked by Betty Arnall and Chuck Place. The birth of the town resulted from the need for railroad ties to supply the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I. Herman C. Kluge, a professional timber cruiser for the Lidgerwood Manufacturing Co. of NY, NY and the Huddlestone Hardware Co. of Norfolk, VA was sent into the area to see whether the forests between Venice and Charlotte Harbor were suitable for commerical timbering operations. Kluge found them very suitable and wrote to his wife Mrs. Anna Kluge that he had found "heaven on Earth" referring to south Venice/Englewood where they later bought a large tract of land. |
