Yesterday's Sarasota Including Sarasota County |
Summary |
Word of a sub-tropical paradise along the west coast of Florida was known only as an "island named Bimini.' Columbus and his men told of it and that began a series of gold-seeking explorers who found their way to this section of Florida. The explorers found that the land became their greatest adversary. Several centuries later, one young man, only fourteen years old, by the name of William H. Whitaker set out from his Savannah home in 1835. He was not seeking gold, but was trying to make his way in the world. With the help of his half brother in Tallahassee he bought a sloop and sailed south in search of a homesite. High yellow bluffs along the mainland coast of Sarasota caught their eyes. By 1842 the Sarasota area had its first settler. Life was primitive, but the woods and water were bountiful. By 1886 the Sarasota Bay area was mainly a fishing village. However, the fishing industry dissipated after the boom of 1886-87, for steamer skippers never liked the trip from Tampa out into the open Gulf down to Sarasota. In addition, Tampa just had a railroad brought into its town linking it with other parts of the state and country. So Tampa, with its new ice packing houses, became the hub of the fishing industry. Pictures from in and around Sarasota are arranged in chronological order from before 1900 with each decade or so having a section dedicated to those years. |
