Doorways Potpourri 2011 Edition |
Summary |
Doorways Potpourri 2011 Edition This is a collection of stories written by those who attend the Life History Writers' Group at the Senior Friendship Center in Venice. The group meets weekly at the center where they hone their writing skills by reading and sometimes discussing their stories to those present. The stories chosen for publication are selected by the writers themselves, often with the encouragement of the group. This spring's collection of stories was written by twenty-nine of the members of the group. this edition is dedicated to Frank and Peg Drabb who led the group faithfully for twenty years. The stories are centered around experiences of the individual writers. One lady wrote about being a big fan of Liberace and attending many of his performances. Another member of the group wrote about snow as a wonderful excuse to go outside and get some exercise, although he readily admits that now he has a great fondness for the Florida sunshine. There are a few stories with a more serious bent. A bus trip to Washington, DC with a stop at the Vietnam Memorial Wall is described. The writer had an inner conflict in visiting the memorial because of her admiration of the Quaker belief in opposition to wars. She did however, walk along that wall on that bitter cold night. She saw several pairs of combat boots, left by the loved ones of some of the fallen. Fresh flowers, some with notes attached, little tokens of love written on paper taped here and there by several names--she wrote she was moved to tears. Another writer tells of the many changes in her life after becoming a widow. Still another writer tells of the joy in finding a person with whom to share his life--this after having been alone for several years. Some of the stories are truly funny. Confusion over just where daffodil bulbs were purchased, makes one laugh out loud. Another story is written about a lucky day when the writer realized the price of gold had reached $1000.00 an ounce. She cashed in a few coins and bars for over $3000.00---which helped pay the expense of her new kitchen counters. The group has the opportunity to use prompts suggested as topics for future stories. Those prompts help when "writers' block" sets in! New Beginnings was one prompt offered this year. One writer listed some positive new beginnings she would be attempting in order to improve the decisions she would be making for the new year. This is the 2011 Edition |
