Yesterday's Palm Beach |
Summary |
The fame of Palm Beach as a resort had its beginning in 1894 when Henry M. Flagler, who had been a partner of john D. Rockefeller in Standard Oil, extended his railroad to the area and opened the Royal Poinciana Hotel. It was the world's largest at the time. The first Breakers Hotel opened soon after, establishing Palm Beach as The premier winter resort in America. Great fortunes were represented here and it attracted presidents, prime ministers and royalty. Wealth and fame seemed to set the tone. The pictures tell the story. From the Flagler years through the great Crash, much of that time frame is represented here through the photographs. |
